Dear friend, just as you could choose to travel by sea, land or by air, the choice between being a really slow or fast designer is yours. But mind you, if you choose to be wasting time on those click-by-click Photoshop operations, there’s gonna be someone out there called ‘the fast designer’, who’ll be through with his work and be getting his next order from YOUR customer . Hard, right? Well, amongst the many things you can do to accelerate your design on photoshop, there is the use of shortcuts.

SOME OTHER TERMS COMMONLY USED IN GRAPHIC, PRINT AND WEB DESIGN

So, this is it again. Part 2. As promised. Aren’t you silently fed up at times with those designers speaking to you in tongues you don’t have a clue about? Fed up with the way they go on and on and on and on with their blurred talk without bothering to know if you understand a thing of what they’re singing? Some time ago, I was. And I wished they would break it down to a language understandable to “us” laymen, but that seldom happened. The reason for that is, the meanings of some words are simply so long that it would take designers triple time to tell you the same thing. So to make things easy for you next time you encounter one, here is a list of common design terms. Stay tuned for more in future posts! Cheese !

Backlink…….Backlinks are links from other sites back to your own. They are also called “trackbacks” (especially on blogs).

Bandwidth…….It refers to the rate at which online data can be transferred to your PC. With high bandwidth internet connections (example: fiber) data loads faster than with low bandwidth connections (example: dial-up connections).

Blog…….A blog is a Web page that has short, frequent updates made to it. Similar to a Web journal or “what’s new” page.

Cache…….Cached files are files that are saved or downloaded by your web browser to make the page load faster next time you visit the site.

Gradient…….A gradient is a gradual transition of colors.

Kerning and Tracking…….Kerning is the horizontal spacing between the letters in a word. The horizontal spacing of a word or words as a whole is known as ‘Tracking’. Different programs deal with this information differently, so the same word in the same typeface can kern differently in different programs.

Leading…….The space between lines of type.

Mock-up/Dummy…….It’s a preview. A prototype model of the brochure advert, poster, card or other design.

Open Source…….Open source refers to the source code of a computer program being made available to the general public. They are generally free or very low cost.

Pixel…….The term “pixel” is actually short for “Picture Element.” It is the smallest discrete component of an image or picture on a screen (usually a colored dot), whether flat-screen (LCD) or tube (CRT) monitor. “The greater the number of pixels per inch the greater the resolution”

Saturation…….The color intensity of an image. An image high in saturation will appear to be very bright. An image low in saturation will appear to be duller and more neutral. An image without any saturation is also referred to as a grayscale image.

Typeface…….The word Typeface is made up of two elements: Type and Face, implying that it means the face of type.  It could also be defined as a set of characters of the same design. These characters include letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and symbols. Some popular typefaces include Arial, Times, Helvetica, and Verdana. While most computers come with some  typefaces installed, there are actually thousands of typefaces available online.
